to be fair though there is a LOT of scifi that does not make that assumption and in fact uses science fiction as a medium to expose binarism and explore alternatives. See: The Left Hand of Darkness, “Bloodchild”, “When I Was Miss Dow”, most of the non-human races in China Mieville’s Bas-Lag books, and even certain episodes of Star Trek (although it is also one of the worst offenders in terms of assuming aliens will resemble humans).

it’s funny b/c my aunt is this very well-meaning but misguided “liberal” by which i mean she generally hopes people will stop being mean to each other but doesn’t go to the trouble of learning anything about an issue she can’t find on facebook. my grandparents are paranoid islamophobic old people. they are now interacting in the kitchen.
